veryone loves the Dickens Christmas Fair. There are reasons for this. Most of us were brought up believing that the holidays were the most magical time of the year. Re-creating that magic for ourselves, our friends, and the public is a wonderful thing to be able to do. Add to that the rich tapestry of Victorian England and you can create a very potent and vital theatrical event. To that end, we are casting a show.

Both the small size of the venue and the type of show that this is necessitate a smaller group of performers than we might have at, say, a Renaissance Faire. We anticipate casting slightly over 300 hand-picked performers who should be the best of what we have to offer, playing specific characters and groups of characters who create their own slices of Victorian life.

The entertainment at the Dickens Fair is divided into areas and shows.
There are six performing areas:

Fezziwig's
Victoria & Albert Bijou Music Hall
Father Christmas Stage (Children's Entertainment)
Silk Road Stage (Variety Entertainment)
Mad Sal's Dockside Ale House
The Adventurer's Club

There are also the characters from Dickens' books who populate the streets of our fair London. These include:

A Christmas Carol
Oliver Twist
Pickwick Papers
David Copperfield
Great Expectations
Nicholas Nickelby
Our Mutual Friend
Little Dorrit

Would you like to be a performer at the Dickens Fair?
This is what you need to do:

#1 Email Missive Maven Cat Taylor at missives@redbarnproductions.org and ask to be added to the Missive List. In the months preceding the beginning of workshops, you will receive an email missive approximately once every few weeks, informing you about workshops, performing opportunities at the Fair and other useful information. Once we get to workshops and the Fair itself, the frequency will increase to approximately once a week. We do not do physical mailings to our performers, this is the only way to stay apprised of all the important information about performing at the Dickens Fair.

#2 Research! If you spend much time commuting, listen to some of the Dickens books on tape or CD, to further your knowledge and fire your imaginations. Patrick Stewart's Christmas Carol (the audio version) is fabulous and so is the Oliver Twist read by Dick Cavett (no kidding). All of the Dickens books are downloadable for various PDA formats, David Perdue has an amazing website, and there are movies galore, especially notable is the 1951 Christmas Carol, starring Alastair Sim. Of course, you could also actually read the books...

#3 Think about what you would like to do (dance in Fezziwig's, sing with the Carolers, portray a Dickens character) and watch the missives for auditions for that group or character. If you would like to propose a show or know a part in a show you would like to audition for, email Entertainment Director Cat Taylor at cat@redbarnproductions.org and ask to be connected to the director of the particular show. If you would like to audition for a Dickens character, email Robert Young at robert@redbarnproductions.org.

#4 Once you have an idea of what you'll be doing at the Fair, start putting your costume together. There's lots of information on this website, so you can start looking around for appropriate garments.

#5 Come to workshops and rehearsals. There will be an all-cast meeting on November rd at 10:00AM at the workshop location where all of the directors and workshop teachers will be introduced. This is always a fun event - don't miss it! There is also a morning meeting on dress rehearsal day, the last day of workshops.

We require a language class (Victorian or Cockney) and two other classes; specifics will be outlined in the missives. There will be a spot for these teacher's initials or stamp on your application along with costume approval (hours will be posted later for this) and the check off box for the $10.00 registration/insurance fee. In addition, ALL PARTICIPANTS who will be parking at the venue are required to purchase their own parking pass for $45.00 per car. This is our cost, so do not lose it. Replacements will cost $45.00 as well. If you do not have a parking pass, Cow palace parking staff will charge you $8.00 per day.

#6 Commit to working hard and having a great time! We are an ensemble cast and all rely on each other to create a great show. Watch out for promotional opportunities in your area and contact the office with your ideas.

See you in Dickens' London!

Cat

Special Note for Caroling Groups
Do you have a costumed caroling group that would like to perform at the Dickens Fair for one very special day? Please contact Robert Young at robert@redbarnproductions.org and be prepared to send in a picture, an audio or video tape and a 19th century appropriate repertoire list. Please have a first and second choice for the day you would like to attend.

Entertainment Staff Information

Cat Taylor: Cat is Director of Entertainment for the Dickens Christmas Fair.
As a show director and musician, she understands performing from both sides of the equation and endeavors to create a supportive and exciting, creative
environment. Cat also founded and administers the missive list, keeping
everyone informed about workshops, auditions and various details of our
version of Victorian London. If you are interested in creating or performing in a stage show, contact her at cat@redbarnproductions.org

Robert Young: In addition to playing Charles Dickens, Robert will once again be our Street Theatre Director. In that capacity he will not only oversee the performers playing specific characters from the books, but also the entire tapestry of how all of the performers interact when offstage. This includes the stage actors who must remember whom they are portraying when they leave the stages. He will also be coordinating the special performance groups who come in from dance troupes, schools, etc. for special one day performances. You can reach him at robert@redbarnproductions.org

Mike Smith: Mike directs "The Adventurer's Club" as a stage representing club life in Victorian England. The area features a number of different groups and characters, such as members of the military, the Royal Geographic Society and various writers and artists. The throughline is the adventurous spirit of the Victorians. The schedule is set up to accommodate various events including, but not limited to, lectures, teas, special events and of course, toasties. More information can be found at www.adventurersclub.info If you are interested in playing historic or literary characters of the time, or in having your group included in activities in this area, please contact Mike at pyromick@pacbell.net

Robin Driskill: Robin portrays our very own Mad Sal as well as directing the wild and wooly environment that is Mad Sal's Dockside Ale House. Her Ladies Oratorical & Recreational Society will also (of course) be present and certainly accounted for. Sal's stage will be populated by individual acts which are cast by their respective directors. The area itself will be populated by Dickens characters from the lower class of London, especially those from Oliver Twist. Robin's email address is marancym@earthlink.net.

David Batzloff: David Batzloff is Mr. Fezziwig and Cathleen Myers is the dance director for Fezziwig's Warehouse. Music and dance and parlour games are the activities, as well as "Siamsa" Scottish Dance performances and shows by visiting "special performers" The music is provided by the inimitable Banger's & Mash. Fezziwig's casts their own performers (those portaying Dickens characters still need to contact Robert Young) and they all must know how to dance! You can contact David at clerk@fezziwigs.org.
